The village of Meadowvale was established in the 1820s by Irish immigrants from the state of New York led by John Beatty. Many different settlers moved through the area at Old Derry Road West and Second Line West. In the village's early years, the main industry was milling with the mills drawing power from the Credit River. In 1831, Beatty sold his land to James Crawford who, like John Simpson, opened saw and carding mills in the village. Francis Silverthorn took over and expanded Crawford's mill Complex in 1844. In the same year, George Ball, a local blacksmith, built Meadowvale's first hotel. After Silverthorn fell into financial trouble, Gooderham and Worts took over his mills and prospered.
In the late 1950s, Highway 401 began construction south of Meadowvale Village and was opened several months later.
In 1968, Meadowvale was incorporated into the new Town of Mississauga. In the 1970s, farmland west of the original Meadowvale Village was developed into a series of subdivisions that make up much of present-day Meadowvale. The community is located in the northwestern part of Mississauga and situated near the Credit River to the east. Pine Forests including other types of trees are along the Credit River which covers most of the central part of the subdivision. Another creek named Levi Creek, runs to the south and southwest and is a tributary of the Credit River, lying to the south. This area has continued to expand ever since, and now fills most of the northwest corner of Mississauga.
Meadowvale village is located adjacent to the largest business park area in Mississauga, with the second largest being located in between Meadowvale Village and Meadowvale along the Hwy 401 corridor, where numerous major corporations have recently located their offices, factories and research and development facilities, including:
Meadowvale Village became Ontario's first Heritage Conservation District in 1980. Today, the Ball motel is used as apartments, the Silverthorn house is a private residence, Gooderham Estates mansion has been newly restored and the Mill ruins can still be seen.
The boundaries of Meadowvale are Tenth Line, Mississauga Road, Highway 410 and Britannia Road and is adjoining the community of Lisgar. There is some overlap between both communities, as the residents from these communities share the public and catholic high schools.
Meadowvale has two lakes, Aquitaine and Wabukayne, both of which were largely man-made. A system of parks and trails connects the two lakes, which are located about 1.5 kilometres apart.
Meadowvale also has a series of bike trails, offering access to, among other things, schools, the Meadowvale Town Centre and the Meadowvale Community Centre.
