Why I Chose to Specialize in Downsizing

This work became personal for me before it became professional.

My mother-in-law and her husband had lived in the same neighbourhood for 35 years. It was the home where they raised their children. She was a devoted gardener and that garden was a genuine source of pride and joy. At 85, with her health beginning to decline, the decision to leave was the right one. But knowing it was right did not make it simple.

We spent 8 months working through that home together. Sorting through 35 years of a life, one room at a time.

What they landed in was a 1,300 square foot ground-floor condo with a wrap-around patio. She could still tend her garden. They could still host the kids and grandkids. Maintenance virtually disappeared. And for the first time in years, they could travel without worrying about the house.

They bought with equity from the sale - cash. What was left gave them the freedom to live the way they wanted while their health still allowed it. We also identified an adult lifestyle residence a few minutes away, so when the time comes, they will already be in a familiar neighbourhood.
